Haplocanthosaurus war ein stämmiger Pflanzenfresser und ein kleinerer Vertreter der Diplodocidea. Er besaß einige Ähnlichkeiten mit Cetiosaurus. Von Haplocanthosaurus wurden gut erhaltene Teilskelette von zwei Individuen, allerdings wie so oft bei sauropoden Fossilien ohne Schädel entdeckt. Der Name Haplocanthosaurus war eigentlich nur zweite Wahl bei der Vergabe des Namens für diesen Dinosaurier. Der Paläontologe John Bell Hatcher, der die Erstbeschreibung verfasste, wählte‬ ursprünglich den Namen Haplocanthus. Da dieser aber bereits für eine Fischgattung in Verwendung war, benannte Hatcher Haplocanthus neu als Haplocanthosaurus.
