Pterosauria Pterodactyloidea Ornithocheiroidea Istiodactylidae

Das besondere Merkmal dieser mittelgroßen Flugsaurier aus der Familie der Istiodactylidae ("Segelfinger") sind die flachen, komprimierten Zähne mit einer dreieckigen Krone. Die bekannten Mitglieder der Istiodactylidae stammen aus England und der Jiufotang Formation in der chinesischen Provinz Liaoning. Sie lebten während der frühen Kreidezeit (Barremium bis Aptium). Diese Flugechsen hatten einen flachen, abgerundeten Schnabel, der dem einer rezenten Ente ähnelte, sie werden deshalb auch als "Entenschnabel-Flugsaurier" bezeichnet. Im Gegensatz zu einer Ente befanden sich in seinem Schnabel jedoch kleine, scharfe Zähne. Diese blattförmigen, spitzen Zähne waren für das Schneiden von Fleisch angepasst, vermutlich ernährten sich diese Flugechsen daher von Fisch.
